BRAYTON BLACK OR INDIAN LADY JAR & S/P SET (PROVINCIAL LADY CJ)

$499.99

Hi, this is a rather rare set made by Brayton Laguna Pottery, c 1940s. She is referred to in some books as the Provincial Lady. She is often found in cookie jar value guides in the Black Americana section, too. After more than 75 years, the “jury” is still out on whether she is Black Americana or as some refer to her as an Indian Lady. This style of pottery was new for Brayton at the time but it quickly proved to be of a lesser quality than their other jars. This style crazed a lot and very quickly. It also does not have the quality “ring” to it that you find in many other jars when you tap them. Consequently, this style did not last long and only a couple of styles of jars were manufactured in this process and look.

What you see in the photos is the jar & range size salt / pepper set. This sale is for these three pieces. We found them in a family home just sitting on a shelf looking …. “provincial”. The jar is marked on the bottom as “Brayton Laguna, Calif. K27 as is the bottom side of the lady shaker. The male shaker has no marking on the bottom since he has such small feet and it won’t hold all that information. On the bottom of the male shaker it simply says “K27”. This is a very rare set to find the shakers and jar together & in such nice condition…no chips or other damage. The shaker set comes with the original stoppers, too! All three pieces for one money! She is so beautifully ugly & a must for the beginner or advanced jar collector!
